||Anneliese Van Der Pol On Racism At Disney, That’s So Raven vi|deo.|
Anneliese made an appearance on the Vulnerable Podcast, which is hosted by fellow Disney veteran Christy Carlson Romano, to discuss some behind-the-scenes information regarding That’s So Raven and the fact that the original concept for the show did not call for Raven-Symoné to play the title role.ko
When I went in to audition, the show was called Absolutely Psychic,” Anneliese told Christy in the latest episode. “It wasn’t called That’s So Raven at all.”
At the time, Raven wasn’t the lead. She was the sidekick. They were looking for a lead and I came in to audition for the lead.”
In the end, someone else was cast in the lead role, and the series’ production got underway quickly after. The producers were drawn to Raven despite casting a different lead character who was originally going to be called Molly.
When they filmed, they realized Raven was the funniest one and had a following, and so they bumped her up to first position.”

After Raven was promoted to lead role, auditions for supporting characters resumed. Anneliese participated in a significant “cattle casting,” and she was ultimately selected to play Chelsea, Raven’s best friend, on the show.
Anneliese, on the other hand, stated that Disney had never intended for a Black woman to be the show’s star when they first created and cast the cast.
“I think that was kind of, like, racism at a low level — I guess if that’s even a possibility. They couldn’t really see a Black girl leading a show. They only saw her as a sidekick.”
