Documents showing estimated casualties in the Bakhmut theater of battle began to circulate on public social networks last week, revealing the existence of the leaked cache.

Observers of the war were given two copies of those documents, one of which had been digitally altered in a crude way to understate Russian casualties and overstate Ukrainian ones. One, which has the right numbers, was leaked to 4chan, the chaotic image board that started the “alt right” movement.

A second set of documents, including the edited image, were being distributed throughout pro-Russian Telegram channels at the same time.

However, neither was the original source. The documents had been shared in closed chatrooms hosted by Discord, a gamer-focused messaging app, prior to appearing on the public internet. Ten of the documents were posted on one server, “Minecraft Earth Map,” on March 4, a month before they appeared on 4chan.

“One of the Discord users responded: “After a brief argument on the server about Minecraft Maps and the war in Ukraine, Aric Toler, an analyst at the Bellingcat investigative research group, stated, “Here, have some leaked documents” and attached ten documents about Ukraine, some of which bore the “top secret” markings.

That user had, in turn, discovered them on a different Discord server that was run by and for fans of the Filipino YouTuber WowMao. There, 30 documents along with “dozens” of other unverified documents about Ukraine had been posted there three days earlier. Even that, however, did not appear to be the original source: The documents may have been initially posted on a third Discord server with the name “Thug Shaker Central,” among other titles, as early as the middle of January.

Toler said, referring to the military-themed YouTube channel, “Posts and channel listings show that the server’s users were interested in video games, music, Orthodox Christianity, and fandom for the popular YouTuber Oxide.” This server was not particularly international in nature, in spite of the fact that its clients had a steadfastly safe position on a few issues, individuals told Bellingcat. Racist memes and slurs were widely circulated.

This isn’t the first time an intelligence breach has been linked to a video game argument, despite the significant scale and sensitivity of the leaks. War Thunder, a vehicular combat simulation game, has gained notoriety due to the large number of leaks associated with it.

The game, which has 70 million players all over the world and is known for being accurate, frequently causes arguments over balance and accuracy. As a result, users have broken the rules in at least 10 separate cases since 2020, most often by posting classified documents about the capabilities of active weaponry in an effort to argue for a better digital version of the vehicle.

In October 2021, for example, characterized plan insights regarding the French Leclerc tank were presented on win a contention about turret revolution speed. To win an argument in July 2021, a user who claimed to be a tank commander in the British army posted documents about the vehicle’s armor structure. In January this year, plan archives covering no less than five separate warrior jets were posted by four distinct clients.
