Paulina Porizkova (born April 9, 1965) is a Czech model and author. In 1984, she became the first Central European woman to appear on the cover of a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

 

Porizkova was born on April 9, 1965 near Prostějov, then Czechoslovakia, to anti-Soviet dissidents Anna Pořízkova and Jiří Pořízka. She was left in the care of her maternal grandmother after her parents fled to Sweden from the Warsaw Pact invasion.The Czechoslovak authorities would not allow her parents to bring her back and the fight that ensued was widely reported in the Swedish press, making her a source of fame.

When Porizkova was seven, her pregnant mother returned to Czechoslovakia with a false passport to rescue her.After a failed attempt, her mother was briefly detained by the National Police and then placed under house arrest with her family. In 1973, international political pressure led by Olof Palme caused the communist government to allow the Pořízek family to be reunited. Porizkova’s parents divorced after her father’s affair. She and her father, who refused to pay child support,had been estranged since they were young.His mother, a midwife, has remarried at least twice and has served in the Peace Corps in Uganda since 2010.
